Deck Guide: Legacy Oops All Spells By Rich Cali Published 7 min read In Legacy, occasionally there are some decks that fundamentally break the rules of Magic. It's an interesting question, and it would be cool to run numbers on it. You didn't face Initiative, but that matchup must be good.I haven't played standard Oops in over a year, so I can't answer that with confidence. Does this build have an easier time hitting 4 mana? Love the tallman tech and the synergies with Cabal Therapy & Agadeem as well as boosting the mana (Opal, Culling). The deck Oops, All Spells improved greatly with the printing of the spell-lands (e.g.: Turntimber Symbiosis), but there hasnt been much experimentation undergone in the Belcher deck - and possible new decklists - besides those that originated Moderns decklist. ![]()

![]() The director of The Spirits Within, Hironobu Sakaguchi, summarized this when he said that he wanted people to look at her and “ be convinced that she’s a human."To be fair, she is a stunning technical achievement, and audiences of 2001 must have felt they were on the cusp of computers taking over when they first saw her stepping off her ship and into the barren ruins of Old New York. Aki wasn’t supposed to be the first computer-generated actor, but the first photorealistic computer-generated actor. The intention was for her to follow in the mold of other mascot characters, but there’s one crucial difference between Aki and her competitors - her design. The Spirits Within lacks this, and the result is a film that wouldn’t have made a splash if not for its name recognition.īut at the center of it is Aki Ross, and it’s here where The Spirits Within becomes far more interesting. Final Fantasy games are not the most elegantly written experiences, but they’ve got an undeniable charm and likable characters who are more than capable of carrying their narratives through any shortcomings. It’s ironic that it owes its origins to a video game since The Spirits Within feels like watching a two-hour prologue to a 20-hour game that the developers forgot to include. Compounding this is how dull the film manages to make an alien invasion, with scene after scene overflowing with exposition that only succeeds to make things more confusing. The characters are walking clichés, and our investment in them comes solely from the A-list cast voicing them (with names including Donald Sutherland, Alec Baldwin, James Woods, and Steve Buscemi). As previously mentioned, the story is nothing sci-fi fans won’t be familiar with, and while that could have been used to make a derivative but still enjoyable adventure, any attempts at this fall flat. It opened to middling reviews from both critics and audiences, and 21 years on that reaction hasn’t improved. ![]() The film is unquestionably an important stepping stone in the development of animation, but it’s also one that failed to reach its potential. RELATED: Celebrities Can Live Forever Thanks to Technology, but Is That a Good Thing? that is bordering on this happening again, it’s worth reflecting on her failed potential. Whether she would have ushered in a new kind of acting had her debut performed better remains unknown, but given the recent news about A.I. However, the subsequent failure of The Spirits Within (grossing just $85 million against a budget of $137 million) brought those plans to a swift end, with her only other appearance being a short film included as a bonus feature on the DVD release of The Animatrix. Ming-Na was ready and willing to reprise the role, and Aki’s inclusion on Maxim’s “Hot 100” list (the first fictional person to do so) raised her profile considerably. Square Pictures intended for her to appear in multiple films across multiple roles, with the option to modify aspects of her appearance (such as her age) depending on the project. ![]() While the story itself is a standard science fiction affair - a team of scientists battle to save a post-apocalyptic Earth from an invading alien race called the Phantoms - its selling point came with its lead character Aki Ross ( Ming-Na Wen), a collection of over 400,000 polygons who was set to become the first artificial actor. But while these techniques have steadily become more widespread, the concept of a CGI actor has roots stretching back decades, and one of the most notable examples comes from a 2001 film that attempted to revolutionize the industry with the first computer-animated actor - the science fiction film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.Ī spin-off of the titular video game franchise, The Spirits Within took advantage of the most sophisticated technology of its time to create a photorealistic CGI blockbuster unlike anything audiences had seen before. ![]() The technology is far from perfect, but it represents a significant change that could alter the very nature of cinema. All of this comes as the dependence on de-aging and CGI ever increases, and you’d be forgiven for thinking that hiring an actual actor may so be a thing of the past. ![]() While a representative for the actor has since denied this to be the case, Willis has previously appeared via deepfake technology in a phone commercial, a hint that his digital counterpart may crop up again. First it was confirmed that James Earl Jones’s voice would be digitally recreated for Darth Vader going forward following his retirement from the role (with the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi already using this technology), and then it was reported that Bruce Willis had sold his likeness to allow for the creation of a digital twin who could appear in future projects. in the creation of art has been a hot topic recently. ![]() ![]() ![]() They are maintaining more capital discipline. Therefore, they are proceeding with caution. Big oil lost $76 billion just two years ago. In four of the past ten years, the oil industry lost money. Private producers have been able to ramp upstream activity more meaningfully given that they do not have to answer to a public investor base.” ![]() It takes time for producers to respond to prices, though, and the price signal was not strong enough for E&Ps to potentially veer from their plans for moderate growth until recently. The geopolitical situation and oil price level may give US producers a license to grow volumes more meaningfully. However, that sentiment may be changing with oil prices where they are and the potential need to replace Russian barrels on the global market. Up until recently, a producer planning to significantly grow production volumes would likely have been punished by investors. “Investors have demanded that producers maintain capital discipline and grow volumes modestly. ![]() That leads me to another issue with the oil companies themselves, where Ms. There are a number of steps between securing a permit and actually bringing a well to production, and issues like labor constraints and fracking sand shortages are added obstacles.” Companies stockpiled permits on federal lands leading up to the President’s inauguration, because several Democratic candidates, including the president, supported banning new drilling permits on federal lands. The permit number is inflated from stockpiling. “The President mentioned thousands of permits on federal lands. But it can take years for a permit to translate into oil production (if the location even yields oil).īut why did they stockpile so many permits? Stacey Morris, who is Director of Research for midstream index and data provider Alerian elaborated on these issues when I reached out to her for comment: The number of rigs drilling for oil and gas has risen by 60% over the past year. It’s not simply that oil companies are sitting on permits. Thus, we have oil production that can’t bounce back quickly because some has been shut in, and new production that can’t proceed as quickly due to manpower and material shortages (e.g., fracking sand). ![]() ![]() ![]() On the whole, however, I absolutely recommend this movie. I may be seeing conflict where none exists, but I cannot say those two things didn’t jump out at me. While the part of me that is desperate to be a better human wants to swallow this movie whole, the skeptical side of me wonders when it will be used as a fundraising tool. Davis is credited as executive producer of the film. Much of the data was culled from research by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. The director of This Changes Everything is a male, Tom Donahue. And yet, two small things about the documentary bother me. They have to move aside and let parity become the norm. Detail lovers and those who enjoy behind-the-scenes stuff will find lots to love in This Changes Everything, too.īut the main concept of the film remains constant. Surprisingly, the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes off especially bad. The nitty-gritty of how Hollywood really works is laid out in full detail. While the documentary does give hope for change in the future, it’s still fairly bleak. He was presented with irrefutable numbers, saw all the white men who were making his television shows, and went out of his way to change it.Īs Meryl Streep says in This Changes Everything, “Progress will happen when men take a stand.” The inherent worry is that men won’t do that. Take, for example, FX Network CEO, John Landgraf, who made a concerted attempt to diversify the creative staff for his productions. The documentary paints an insidious picture, but it doesn’t spend its entire time painting men as the enemy. And have you made the connection between the advent of talkies and the onset of sexism in movies? It hadn’t occurred to me until This Changes Everything. ![]() Have you heard of The CSI Effect? I had not. In the movies, smart girls don’t get laid by handsome, rugged men.ĭid you know there was a discrimination lawsuit filed against the Director’s Guild of America? I didn’t. Women have always been required to be beautiful, not smart. According to the data, that has never happened. Thelma and Louise was supposed to change everything.Īny time women have made any kind of inroads into the entertainment business, it was supposed to have kicked off a revolution. And since 80% of worldwide media content is created in the US, that kind of revelation was a global epiphany. There are women who didn’t realize they could be anything besides girlfriends or sidekicks until they saw Thelma and Louise. This Changes Everything paints a clear picture of the importance of on-screen representation. There is information contained with this movie, hard data that we all, especially people who consume visual media, need to know. Your gender, orientation, or heritage doesn’t matter. And I’ll say this: you should watch it, too. However, I’m glad I watched This Changes Everything. After all, what do I really know about the problems women face? How many biases do I exhibit on a daily basis that I’m not even aware of? Because of my own self-assessment, I did not feel qualified to write this review. In a situation like this, I worry that becomes a detriment to me. The fact is I’m still a straight white guy in the American South. When I find them, lying about like abandoned couches in my subconscious, I make every attempt to move them and overcome them. I don’t think I hold to the sexist viewpoints and behaviors of the past. Like many people of my age and ilk, I consider myself to be enlightened. Make no mistake: I had more than a passing desire to see This Changes Everything, a fascinating documentary about discrimination against women in Hollywood. ![]() ![]() ![]() Arraigned and pleaded not guilty to all counts on 12/6.
