An Ailanthus tree is the preferred host of SLF, therefore these trees are commonly chosen for these traps. With lizards, slices of pear or sometimes petfood are used to attract them to the trap. The trap uses a methyl salicylate lure to attract the insects and a kill strip to finish the job. Kate Guthrie A common way to monitor what insects or lizards are around, is to use a live-capture pitfall trap which skinks, geckos and ground-based insects then fall into. L: total body length MBW: maximum body width ABW: anal-body width. (1999) compared abundance and the number of morpho-species collected in a standard number (15) of pitfall traps with diameters of 4.3, 7.0, 11.1, and 17.4 cm. Adults and larvae were collected by using baited pitfall traps during the fruiting. Compared to similar sticky traps and jar traps, these circle traps have proven to be more effective at knocking back SLF. Luff (1975) found that glass pitfall traps with 6.5 cm diameter caught a greater total number of Coleoptera than did glass traps of 2.5 cm diameter. These circle traps are used to both catch and monitor SLF populations from May-October. APHIS has set up a trapping station in the EcoPreserve – so if you come across it please let it alone as it is helping to control the spread of this noxious pest. As it is a serious pest of agricultural crops and selected woody plants, the USDA APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) has an active monitoring and control program. Pitfall traps are simply containers dug into the ground so the top of the container is level with the ground. 2 April 2012 Article Assessing capture techniques for ground beetles Andrea Dávalos and Bernd Blossey The Canadian Entomologist Published online: 2 April 2012 Article Ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) inventories: a comparison of light and pitfall trapping Y. road in P-2 during last week in September, A. The Spotted Lanternfly (SLF) ( Lycorma delicatula ) is an introduced leaf hopper insect that is rapidly spreading across the MidAtlantic states. 1970, six additional traps were obtained and two traps were placed in. We sought to address 3 objectives: 1) document how commonly pitfall traps are used compared with other methods for sampling arthropods 2) examine whether the most common methods varied among disciplines or major vegetation communities 3) summarize the extent of variation in pitfall trapping methods used by past inves- tigators and 4) propose.
